Indigenous Artisan Market “Iitohpoom’op“
On Saturday, June 3, 2023, the Town of Okotoks’ Mayor, Tanya Thorn, and Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Elaine Vincent, were transferred a Blackfoot-style painted lodge (Tipi) by four Blackfoot elders and knowledge keepers. On June 2 and 3, 2023, the Town of Okotoks hosted their first all-Indigenous Artisan Market “Iitohpoom’op,” which translates to “store,” and was free of charge for all Indigenous artisans and vendors wishing to participate.
June is the start of National Indigenous Peoples History Month. The Town of Okotoks wants to commemorate last year’s Tipi transfer and kick off National Indigenous Peoples History Month with a “Tipi Camp” and our 2nd annual all-Indigenous Artisan Market, “Iitohpoom’op.”
The all-Indigenous Artisan Market will take place inside the Okotoks Recreation Centre (ORC - 99 Okotoks Drive) and will operate on:
- Saturday, June 1, 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.; and
- Sunday, June 2, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
